Imo State Government in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and Drug Free World Africa, DFWA, have raised the alarm over the high rate of drug addiction among youths, stressing that it is imperative for all stakeholders to fight the menace.

They said that the unhealthy trend has become another pandemic that needs to be urgently tamed.

Speaking to DAILY POST on the dangers of drug abuse among youths in Owerri, Imo State capital, the Special Adviser to Imo State Governor on Health, Dr Lina Okereke said unknown to us, this habit is one of the major hidden causes of organ failure.

She said our children and people are developing chronic diseases and dying in numbers from organ failure such as kidney, heart and others, cancer and mental health because of this lifestyle.

The Coordinator of DFWA Imo State Chapter said most importantly, this is a direct and indirect fight to subdue youth restiveness and other social vices in our communities and Imo State in general.

“Today, youths, including secondary school students, are seen in secluded and open places taking all manner of substances to get high.

“Imo Government cannot do it alone. This is achievable with the concerned effort of all. We call on all churches, schools, universities, hospitals, allied institutions, organizations, ministries, parastatals, and several others to join the fight against high rates of youth addiction.

While still lending her voice to the discussion on behalf of the groups, the governors aide said they want to “affect lives, the lives of those who have been affected by drug use. Everyone is affected because there is always a family member or a friend who has taken to drugs.”
